How not to make backups

My Computer crashed, and managed to corrupt the registry. So Windows wouldn't boot. Luckily, I had a live Linux CD, so I could boot and search the web. KB307545 contained lots of useful information. I could use the recovery console to boot Windows and then use System Restore, but...

The current system configuration is not aware of the previous restore points. You must have a previous copy of the registry from a previous restore point to make the previous restore points available again.

WTF? System Restore, the number one most useful tool for fixing registry problems, requires the registry to operate? That's just fucking silly.

(Incidentally, I gave up and decided to back up my stuff and format. Meh.)
